Political globalization

1.     Summary

According to article, there are 3 dimensions about political globalization: geopolitics of global power, the rise of a global normative culture, polycentric networks.  

About geopolitics of global power, each different political culture is rising by democratic nation-state of world. The globalization in the democratic politics has been the basis of ‘new world order’. In other worlds especially in democracy, political globalization means that a new order of United States. Truly United States gives effects in many parts to whole world. And about the rise of a global normative culture, it means that national politics has some outline and be framed normally. These global rules can give effects to people in the world. Also, about third dimension of political globalization, polycentric networks, is related non-territorial politics such as communication and new relationship. Polycentric network means that network had many centre. It also related to emerging forms of global governance.

And there are 4 examples that can explain these 3 dimensions about political globalization. 4 examples are related to social transformation. Those are named the transformation of nationality and citizenship, the transformation of the public sphere and political communication, civil society, and the transformation of global space and borders.

For explain the transformation of the nation-state, nationality and citizenship, this article says about the term ‘nation-state’ first. Nation-state means that the world of governance without government. Globalization can help that nation-state maintains character of independence. Truly many countries are formed by globalization. And through globalization, relationship between nation state and state is reduced. Thus because of this reducing, right about governance of state like sovereignty is also cannot display own power. About the transformation of the public sphere and political communication, the article says that communication is important part of political globalization. And political globalization is also important in perspective of changing in communication and in the wider transformation of public sphere. The centrality of global civil society has similar pattern with above 2 examples. The pattern is that the result of globalization is universalization of territorial norms. So in terms of political globalization, the centrality of global civil society is related to polycentric governance deeply. In political globalization, that term is considered as quite natural. About transformation of spaces and borders, political globalization revaluates the meaning of spaces and borders of the world.

2.     interesting, learned things

About political globalization, this article usually refers ‘democracy’. In other words, political globalization is spreading democratic thinking. Also as globalization progresses, importance of communication and network among nations increased in the whole world. And political globalization is related to relationship among nation-states, can give effects to non-territorial phenomenon similarly with cultural globalization. So I think many parts of globalization and many interpretations about globalization are based on non-territorial discussion. Especially political globalization emphasizes polycentric networks that networks having a string of centre. In article, network is not a nation-state’s network. That is network including data of whole world. Also, centre is not a nation-state, transcended borders of states.

And also in political globalization, there exists problem of political monopoly. In political aspects, United States has power of govern other states. This phenomenon is called geopolitics of global power. I can learn about monopoly and global political, cultural power through lecture. I think economic aspect is also same with it.

More interested thing in this lecture is ‘the transformation of nationality and citizenship’. Because my Wikipedia translation assignment topic is ‘global citizenship’, transformation of citizenship is more interested topic to me. Global citizenship is a conscious dimension in globalization, it means that right, responsibility as being member of global community. I think the term of global citizenship is a result about non-territorial phenomenon and physical globalization. I think visible globalization has to be preceded before non-visible globalization and conscious aspect in globalization like global citizenship.

Global citizenship is a term having a promise that all aspects of world establish deterritorialization perfectly. And also that means people agree with escaping their nations, abandoning their nationality physically and consciously. I wonder global citizenship can realize in the real world. Can people agree with abandoning their own nationality, nations, and right?
